Tiny Desk AI – Put Yourself (or Your Trio) in the Outstanding Meme
Tiny Desk AI puts you into the Tiny Desk 'Outstanding' moment: in Solo you are the lead singer in headphones who turns, waves and throws your head back laughing at the desk; in Trio, two friends join you as the keyboard player who opens the clip and the sax player who closes it. Faces, hair and clothes come from your photos, the bookshelf set, the shots and the sound come from the clip, and you get a 15-second vertical MP4.

What does the Tiny Desk AI video look like?
The Tiny Desk AI video is a 15-second vertical clip of a desk concert squeezed into three shots, set against the famous wall of bookshelves, records and toys. It opens on the front of the desk, where a keyboard player in headphones sings at a red keyboard while two backing singers clap behind. Then it cuts to the lead singer in a close-up: they turn to the band, wave a hand past their face and throw their head back laughing, the moment everyone remembers from the meme. It ends on a sax solo, with the keyboard player leaning into the corner of the frame.
In the AI version, the lead singer is you. In Trio, the keyboard player and the sax player are your friends too. Faces, hair and clothes come from your photos; the set, the headphones, every cut and the sound come from the clip.
Where does the Tiny Desk AI trend come from?
The Tiny Desk AI trend grows out of Charlie Wilson's NPR Tiny Desk concert. According to NPR, the former Gap Band singer played the series in June 2023 to open Black Music Month, backed by a band and a row of background singers, and closed with "Outstanding" from 1982's The Gap Band IV. Rolling Stone described how the set turned into church, with Wilson breaking into a praise break in the middle of it, and EURweb collected the flood of joking, adoring posts that followed.
That joy is what the meme runs on: a singer so happy at a desk full of instruments that they can't stop laughing. AI remakes put friends, parents and coworkers in that seat, and the format grew Solo and group versions so a whole friend group can take the stage. The clip this effect follows is one of those AI remakes, not footage of the concert. This site is not affiliated with NPR, Tiny Desk, Charlie Wilson or The Gap Band, and the video doesn't use their likeness.
Solo or Trio: who should take which role in Tiny Desk AI?
Pick Solo when it's about one person, and Trio when you want the whole desk band to be your friends. Each role lives in one shot, so the order of the uploads decides who plays what.
| Slot | Role | When they are on screen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Lead singer | Turns, waves and laughs with head thrown back | The long middle close-up, about 6 seconds |
| 2 · Sax player | Plays the closing sax solo | The final shot, about 3 seconds |
| 3 · Keyboard player | Sings at the red keyboard, then peeks in at the end | The opening shot and the corner of the last one |
Give the lead singer slot to whoever laughs the loudest in real life, or to the person the video is for: a birthday, a promotion, a band reunion. The sax slot suits the friend who always plays it cool, and the keyboard slot suits someone who likes a big entrance, because they open the video. There is no two-person version yet; two friends can each make a Solo and post them side by side.
Will the Tiny Desk AI video actually look like me?
Yes. In Solo your face, hair, skin tone and clothes carry through the whole lead-singer close-up, including the turn, the hand past your face and the laugh with your head thrown back. In Trio each friend keeps their own face and outfit in their own shot, without swapping roles. The headphones, microphones and instruments come from the clip, and the sound is already in the file.
Both examples on this page were made with this effect from photos of AI-generated, fictional adults who look nothing like the original musicians. They are not the original clip and are not edited. The Solo example is the full video; the Trio example shows seconds 3 to 13, and your Trio video runs the full length. In Solo, the band members you didn't replace can look a little different from one video to the next, because only your role is fixed to a photo.
What comes from your photos and what stays from the clip:
| Stays from the clip | Comes from your photos | May vary between runs |
|---|---|---|
| The bookshelf set and soft light | Faces, hairstyles and hair colour | The faces of band members you didn't replace |
| Headphones, mics, keyboard and sax | Skin tone, beard, glasses | Exact expression in the laugh |
| The three shots, their timing and the sound | Each person's clothes | Small details on the shelves |
| The two backing singers in the opening shot | Body proportions | How the hand blurs past the face |
How do I do the Tiny Desk trend without filming it?
Upload one photo for Solo or three for Trio on this page and press Generate, and Tiny Desk AI builds the desk concert around you, so you skip the instruments, the bookshelf set, the matching headphones and getting three people to laugh on cue.
Which photos work best for Tiny Desk AI?
Clear, front-facing photos of one adult each work best. The lead singer is filmed close up and turns side-on, so that photo matters most; the sax and keyboard players are smaller in frame, so a sharp face is more important than the outfit.
| Photo | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| Shoulders up or half body, facing the camera | Best match: the face holds through the turn and the laugh |
| Already smiling or laughing | Helps the big laugh look natural on that face |
| Side profile only | The turn works, but the laughing front view may drift |
| Big hat or headphones in the photo | The clip's headphones go on top and can clash |
| Group photo in one slot | The AI may pick the wrong person; crop to one |
For Trio, use three people who look clearly different from each other, in different coloured tops. It keeps every role easy to tell apart in the cuts.
How do you post a Tiny Desk AI video?
Post it as a celebration: the meme is pure joy, so it lands best when the caption says what the laughing is about.
- Name the occasion. "Me when the group project finally submitted" or "my dad hearing his song come on" turns the laugh into a story.
- Make it a band. Trio with your real-life band, team or flatmates, captioned with your band name, reads like a real Tiny Desk booking.
- Pair two Solos. For two people, post two Solo videos back to back, one for each.

- 480p is enough for a story or a group chat; 720p keeps faces sharper in close-ups and full-body shots, which is worth it for public posts.
- The sound is already in the MP4 and the moves are timed to it, so keep the original audio when you post.
- If the face drifts, try a sharper photo with even front light and nothing covering the eyes. Crop group photos to one person.
- A failed generation returns its credits automatically. If a video finishes but looks wrong, contact support with the video link.
- TikTok, YouTube and Instagram ask creators to label realistic AI video. Turn on the AI label when you post.
- Your photos are deleted after 7 days, and the video has no extra watermark.
Frequently asked questions
What is Tiny Desk AI?
An AI video effect that puts people from your photos into a short Tiny Desk-style performance of the 'Outstanding' meme: a lead singer laughing at the desk, a keyboard player and a sax solo, with the sound already in the file.
What is the difference between Solo and Trio?
Solo takes one photo and makes you the lead singer; the keyboard and sax players stay band members from the clip, not you. Trio takes three photos and replaces all three roles, so you and two friends are the whole front line.
Is there a version for two people?
Not yet. Two friends can each make a Solo, or you can use Trio with a third friend. A two-person version will be added once it reliably keeps both faces in the right roles.
Which photo goes in which slot?
The first slot is the lead singer, who gets the long laughing close-up. The second is the sax player in the final shot. The third is the keyboard player who sings in the opening shot and peeks in at the end.
Do we keep our own clothes?
Yes. Each person wears the clothes from their own photo. The headphones, microphones and instruments come from the clip.
How long is the video?
About 15 seconds, vertical 9:16, in three shots with the sound in the file. The Trio example on this page shows seconds 3 to 13; your Trio video is the full clip.
Is this connected to NPR or Charlie Wilson?
No. The effect follows a fan-made AI version of the meme. This site is not affiliated with NPR, Tiny Desk, Charlie Wilson or The Gap Band, and the video doesn't use their likeness.
Which photos work best?
Clear, front-facing photos of one adult each, shoulders up or half body, eyes visible. Most of the clip is close-up, so sharp faces matter more than full-body shots.
Can I use photos of my friends?
Only with their permission, and only of adults. Each photo should show just the person for that role; crop group photos first.
